Aerobics: For Healthier You

I’m sure you’ve been advised to do a lap before a game, a few sprints before a track meet, or a small jog before a big run. You’ve classified these all as warm up exercises, a way to get your body familiar with moving a little bit before you move a lot. These warm up exercises are in fact aerobic workouts and they are vital to every single cardio workout or strength training that you do.

Aerobic workouts don’t have to only be used as warm up exercises. A workout in their own right, they are designed to get your heart pumping in reaction to you moving your muscles. They can include something as simple as a jog and can be as complex as a few laps in a pool or a bike ride. aerobics

The light movement you do during aerobics produces, instead of uses, extra energy. Before a heavier workout, this extra energy is necessary to have, but if aerobic exercises are the core of your workout, you can plan to workout longer without getting tired as fast. For example, notice how tired you get when breathing heavily during a run. In aerobic exercises, you are gradually increasing your heart rate, leading a steady flow of oxygen to your muscles and back through your lungs. This steady flow is consistently supplying you with more energy and endurance to complete your workout. Additionally, try prolonging your aerobic workout like you would any other workout; listen to music, watch TV, or exercise with a friend.

Aside from the benefits that aerobic exercises have as a daily workout, also consider the positive effects they have mentally. I, myself, am guilty of getting anxiety from treacherous cardio workouts. When you know the fatigue and challenge you face from a long run, it makes it harder to go back and do it everyday, even if everyone does promise it will get better with time. Aerobics, giving you more energy as you go along, rather than depleting you, can make working out a more enjoyable experience. Additionally, you can change up your exercises from day-to-day, rather than committing to the same long run every time. Setting yourself up in enjoyable activities that challenge your body will not only give you physical results but also stimulate your mental well being.

So if you are not training for a specific sport or marathon and are just seeking general, healthy well being, aerobics might be perfect for you. Consider getting involved in a weekly aerobics class or watching some videos to get some ideas of different exercises that you can incorporate into your daily regimen. Do exercises that make you happy and challenge your endurance so at the end of your workout you feel motivated and more energetic than before. If you’re looking for more of a challenge, try using aerobics alongside your strength training or cardio workouts.

Remember to use caution in all exercising and seek help from a doctor or physical trainer if you have any questions.
