What are Thermogenic Supplements?
The clue is in the name, thermo, which means heat and thermogenic supplements aim to promote weight loss by raising the body’s heat. This rise in heat in turn causes an increase in metabolism, meaning more calories and fats are burned off. Such supplements also claim to suppress the appetite, further boosting weight loss.

Raising body temperature can be a dangerous thing and going too far can even affect brain function, causing anxiety and a tingling feeling in the head. Other possible side effects include hot flashes and out-of-control sweating. If you take a thermogenic supplement before working out you run the risk of nausea, itching, vomiting and heartburn; these effects can occur up to two or three hours after working out.
It’s also possible to overdose and lose its ability to cool naturally. If you take these supplements then you should make sure that you drink plenty of water. These supplements work well to reduce weight for the first five to six weeks of use, but this effectiveness reduces gradually, until, after eight weeks of use you will see very little weight loss. It is therefore necessary to take breaks between courses of these supplements.

Many people prefer to use natural products and it’s possible to find thermogenic supplements sourced from nature.
These include:
Chromium Picolinate: this natural supplement increases metabolizing of carbohydrates and fat. It also enhances insulin and is used by diabetes sufferers.
Hydroxycitric Acid: this is found naturally in citrus fruits and is a relative of citric acid. Sourced from the fruit Garcinia Cambogia, it stops sugars and starches being converted to fat. Its effect on serotonin is also said to suppress appetite.
Green Tea: Yes, green tea, which has been known to be beneficial for thousands of years. As well as its thermogenic action it is antiviral, antioxidant and antibacterial.
Guarana: This herb is of the Paullinia Cupana species and is said to reduce appetite, increase stamina, and cut weight. Guarana is also used by women with PMS and those with nerve problems.
The safety of thermogenic supplements is still up for debate so; if you want to lose weight you should think of exercise and diet first. Using these supplements alongside a healthy diet might be a good way to go and you should consult your doctor before using these supplements.
