avoid food cravingsA day of calorie counting and healthy eating can all fall apart when a food craving strikes at night. Late night cravings for unhealthy food are often cited as a reason for failing to live the healthy life we’d all love to lead.

Here are five tips to help you avoid these nasty cravings.

1. Prepare yourself:

Forewarned is forearmed goes the saying and it stands the truth test for avoiding a food craving turning into an 11pm enchilada feast. If you’re ready for a craving you’ve got a chance of beating it. Firstly you can try and reduce the effect the craving is going to have on your health by making sure your kitchen is well-stocked with healthy snacks. Most people find fruit the best option because it gives you something of a sugar kick, but if you can fill up on carrot sticks then having them washed, sliced and ready to go is a great way to keep your craving healthy. The second option is to take your mind off your craving: you must have some activity you can enjoy without waking the household. Try reading, playing computer games or writing up your diary to make food the last thing on your mind.

2. Don’t mistake a food craving for real hunger:

Cravings don’t necessarily mean you’re actually hungry and are more likely to be a product of habit or psychology. When you crave some candy don’t give in, stop and listen to what your body is telling you.

3. Build up your willpower:

This works particularly well if you’re trying to control your diet to improve your personal appearance. When you think you’re crying out for a plate of pasta, strip off and take a look in the mirror. You’ll see what you’ve achieved and you don’t want to throw that away for just a craving do you?

4. Give yourself an earlier bedtime:

You’ll often find that cravings are creatures of habit; common times are 10-11pm. Well, defeat that late night alarm clock in your stomach by being asleep when it rings.

5. Cut down on your calories:

If you’re finding your cravings at night are too much for you to resist, then you can take action to mitigate the effects by limiting what you eat during the day. Take a look at what your craving is generally for and work out its calorie value. If you eat a 300 calorie slice of cake at night, try and find a 300 calorie saving you can make during the day. Switch to lower-calorie snacks or change from sodas to water to make that extra saving during the day.

Finally, you will have to admit to yourself that the best – in fact – the only way you can control these cravings is with your own will power. These tips can help you but what you’re going to have to learn is that, in the end, you need to say “no” to yourself and mean it.
