How to Find the Perfect Treadmill

In many ways the treadmill is the perfect exercise because you can tone up and lose weight while doing any number of other things at the same time. You can read, listen to music, watch TV, keep an eye on the kids, or even learn to juggle, all while you work out.

Modern treadmills now come in very trim models that can be folded for easy storage, and it’s a very small apartment indeed that can’t accommodate a treadmill.

These wonderful machines date back to a much less enjoyable activity; the grinding of grain by farm workers who stood on moving levers.

You should always take care while on your treadmill – even if you are enjoying some of the distractions listed above – as 2.5 times your body weight is passing through your feet as you jog along.

A good quality treadmill will incorporate a bigger motor, giving the machine a longer life and less need for maintenance. They also often feature a plethora of monitors to keep an eye on your health and your performance. Many have pulse monitors built in or provide a connection to clip to your ear or stick onto the chest. The most luxurious treadmills might even offer a built-in stereo system, a holder for your cold drink and a fan to keep you cool while you run.

To get an intense workout from your treadmill, you’ll need to get one that allows you to adjust the incline: running uphill is much harder than running on the flat even when you’re in your living room. So select a treadmill that you can adjust, also consider investing in a machine that will come to a halt automatically should you slip; it’s a good safety feature. When choosing your treadmill consider how much power you’ll need. 1.5-3 horsepower is more than enough if you plan to run rather than walk.

The fitter you are and the harder you are going to working your treadmill, the more power you will need. Power can be expensive and you should consider looking at the models available in your local gym, many of which can be adapted for domestic use, you may even be able to pick up second-hand machines when the gym upgrades their equipment.

The more powerful machines can be noisy, so check out what silencer options are included. Most of all, however, look at reviews that focus on reliability and longevity. A long-term warranty – at the very least a year – is a must when you choose your treadmill.

Looking at online stores gives you plenty of time to make your choice and might also help to save your pocket book.

It’s good advice to consult with your doctor before starting on a new fitness regime. Ask friends who own machines if you can try out their treadmills to see if this sort of exercise is suited to you and to check out the advantages of their machines.

Running or walking on a treadmill is simple exercise and relatively low impact; almost everyone can benefit from treadmill exercise.
