How to get rid of excess saliva when pregnant

There are various symptoms that women suffer with when pregnant, however excess saliva is one of the least common symptoms. The medical term for this condition is sialorrhea. Al tough it is not that common, thousands of women still suffer in silence every day as a result of this uncomfortable side effect of pregnancy. It has been stated that excess saliva occurs as a result of the build of hormones in the body. Another cause is heartburn, as it can cause excess acid from the stomach to end up in your oesophagus which can cause excess saliva. There are various things you could do to get rid of this some of the methods only give you a slight relief but some of them can actually get rid of it for a few hours at a time.

Drink plenty of water

This helps to flush out your mouth as well as aid you in swallowing excess saliva. The best thing to do is carry around with a bottle of water and sip it throughout the day. Boiled candy (sugar free)

It is very important if you are going to use this method that you go for the sugar free variety, because sugar can actually increase the production of saliva in the mouth. Carry with you a packet of boiled candy and have one whenever you feel you need one.

Chewing gum

Many women have reported that chewing gum can really help with the getting rid of excess saliva when pregnant. It works by absorbing the excess saliva as well as making it easier to swallow it. Again with this method try going for the sugar free variety instead of the one contains sugar.

Cinnamon

This is one of the best ways of getting rid of excess saliva, what you need to do is put a small amount of fresh ground cinnamon under your tongue. Leave it there then swallow it down with some water. This really works but be careful not to put too much under your tongue as this could cause your mouth to become too dry.

Pumpkin seeds

Many women have reported that eating raw pumpkin seeds helps to dry the mouth out, the only thing with this you have to constantly keep eating them for it to work.

Medication

One of the last resorts when it comes to this problem of excess saliva when pregnant, is to seek medical help. There are various drugs you could take to help dry out the mouth. You should be careful though as taking drugs while you are pregnant is not advisable, however the excess saliva becomes unbearable then you might have to go down this route.

As stated previously excess saliva during pregnancy is not a common symptom, many women do suffer from it. It is comforting to for some women to know that there are steps they can take to relieve if not totally eradicate the problem.
