The Atkins diet is a very popular way of losing weight. Many celebrities such as Jennifer Aniston, Elizabeth Roehm, Halle berry, and Stevie Nicks have all used the Atkins diet with great success. Its popularity is mainly due to the fact that it is a diet that allows you to eat pretty much what you like, apart from carbohydrates. So you are never left feeling hungry, unlike some diets. You can still eat in restaurants, as it is not as strict and food specific as most other diets.

To start the Atkins diet you will go through an induction phase. This is where you will prepare your body to eliminate carbohydrates from your diet. This phase is known as ketosis. You will be limited to consuming 20 gm of carbohydrates a day; you will eat proteins and fats to give you energy.

You will need to eat between three and five meals a day. Meals will consist of meat and cheese, and some salads, too. You will need to drink a minimum of eight large cups of water on a daily basis. Stick to the Atkins diet consistently for a period of two weeks and you will see a reduction in your weight.

The next step is known as the ongoing weight loss phase. You will now need to work out a weekly meal plan. You will now need to start adding small amounts of carbohydrates to your meal plans. The recommended amount is 5 gm. Each week add five gm of carbohydrates to your meal plan until your weight loss completely slows down. You can buy Atkins milkshakes or Atkins chocolate bars to replace meals during the day. Write a food diary so that you know exactly what and when you are eating.

The next step is known as the pre maintenance phase, start adding more carbs to your diet. Add 10 gm each day; this stage is constructed to help you to conserve the weight that you have lost. You are also allowed to eat a few sugary foods in this phase but not too many.

For lifetime maintenance, you will need to determine an acceptable carbohydrate range. This is the amount of carbohydrates consumed without gaining additional weight. This is known as your “Atkins Carbohydrate Equilibrium” or ACE.

If you keep within your ACE you will not gain or lose weight. You will need to control your weight, so be sure to weigh yourself weekly. Set a target, e.g. if you want to maintain weight between 130-135 lbs make sure you stay within this range. Do not go below 130 lbs or above 135 lbs.

Take a look at the Atkins lifestyle food guide. This guide lists the kinds of food that you should be eating to maintain a healthy weight.

As well as following a healthy diet, also follow an exercise regime and stick to it.
