Though losing fat is the most basic requirement of getting six pack abs, you must exercise correctly to tone your abdominal muscles. As abdomen is not a separate part of your body, you cannot think of getting six pack abs without losing fat from your overall body first. If you are highly overweight, you must concentrate on increasing your metabolism by cardio exercises and an effective diet plan before trying Ab exercise. Even if you are not obese, it will take time to get flat washboard abs therefore have patience and keep working out.

Sit up and crunches are some of the popular methods of getting six pack abs. However, the trick is to do crunches correctly. Similarly there are a few other exercises that work wonders for getting six pack abs.

  • Squats- Abs muscles and back muscles work in tandem therefore you cannot tone your abdominal muscles without working out your back muscles. Squatting is a good exercise for both Abdominal and back muscles. Learn correct squatting methods for quick effects.
  • Sit Ups- General sit ups are good but they are not effective once you are comfortable with them. Start doing sit ups by putting some weight on your chest. Weighted sit ups keep toning your abs muscles. You can also try inclined bench to add more challenge to sit ups.
  • Leg Lifts – Lie on the floor and try to lift your legs straight up without bending your knees until they make a 90 degree angle with the floor. Lower your legs without touching the ground. Repeat it as many times as you can but do not overdo it. This is a wonderful exercise for getting six pack abs at home.

As mentioned above that increasing your metabolism and burning fat from other parts of your body is very important to get six pack abs, you must try to bring about some changes in your eating habits as well. Make sure that you eat a lot of fibrous foods while cutting down on junk food. Drinking a lot of water and eating 5-6 small meals a day keep your metabolism in perfect order.
