Some pregnant many women neglect one very important thing and that is drinking water. A pregnant woman needs more water than a woman who is not pregnant and here is why. Here we will stress the importance of drinking water for pregnant women, any pregnant woman if not drinking enough water should take heed, as lack of fluids for a pregnant woman can be detrimental to the health of the baby and herself.
Water is vital to our survival generally but we must pay close attention when we are pregnant due to the fact that our bodies are growing and changing every day. The baby is surrounded in amniotic fluid which needs to be replenished and kept fresh. Many women go on a quest of drinking soda whilst pregnant and this is vet dangerous, it is OK to have a the odd soda here and there but since pregnant women are prone to gestational diabetes this should be avoided.
Dehydration
If you fail to drink enough while you are pregnant you could run the risk of becoming dehydrated, dehydration is seriously not a joke for a pregnant woman because it causes contractions, and can cause someone to go into premature labour, it can also cause a situation where the body ejects the baby, this is very rare however with the wonders of modern medicine but it is still something that should not be ignored.
Urinary Tract Infections
Many women suffer from urinary tract infections during pregnancy but you will be more prone to it if you fail to drink enough water . When a woman is pregnant the tubes that lead to the bladder become distorted, so in a normal woman they would remain smooth and curved but in a pregnant woman those tubes are rigid and, urine can collect in those tubes and become infected. Thus causing a urinary tract infection, which if not treated can lead to serious kidney problems. The problem with urinary tract infections of UTI’s is that when a pregnant woman contracts one, it can cause premature labour, many women take this for granted but it is true and many cases of severe UTI have resulted in a premature birth.
How much water ?
In order to keep your body fully hydrated you must drink at least 12 large glasses of water a day, however this may not always be necessary as your food contains water, and other drinks like tea count towards your daily allowance. Do not drink soda to substitute water though because as said before too much soda can be a contributing factor in gestational diabetes so be warned. Keep yourself hydrated throughout the day by carrying a bottle of water with you everywhere you go and sipping it throughout the day. Do not wait until you are dying of thirst before you drink. If you are exercising, drink more as you feel you need to, but a pregnant woman should never overdo any exercise regime. You can drink boiled tapped water or bottled water but do not drink the flavoured variety as you may as well be drinking soda. If you simply cannot stand water try and add some lemon to it drink it ice cold and through a straw.
