Weight Loss- How to Break a Weight Loss Plateau

by FitnessExpert on May 7, 2010

The biggest motivation killer while trying to lose weight is to hit weight loss plateau. You hit the weight loss plateau when the scale seems to be stuck at the same number for a long time. Despite eating right and exercising regularly, you suddenly stop losing weight. If you do not see any results for weeks, you are de-motivated which further reduces your chances of losing weight. Surprisingly many weight loss programs and diet books do not mention about the plateauing effect.

Your body can be compared to a sophisticated machine which adjusts to your exercise routine within weeks. You may see some remarkable results in the first few weeks but as your body gets accustomed to a routine exercise program, it stops responding to your exercise. It results in no weight loss after a few weeks.

Breaking the Weight Loss Plateau

If you want to lose weight permanently, you must avoid hitting the weight loss plateau. Following are some tips to help you achieve this goal.

  • Keep Your Exercise Routine Changing- Do not let your body adjust to a particular set of exercises. You will simply be wasting your time and energy when your body does not respond to the exercise. Your need to keep your body “on its toes” to gain maximum possible benefits from exercise. Change your exercise routine every week. If you are doing low intensity work outs, try some high intensity work outs or vice versa.
  • Change Your Caloric Intakes – You need not be precise in calorie counting. Change your caloric intakes regularly. For example instead of eating exactly 1800 calories every day, you can take 1400 calories one day and increase it to 2000 calories next day. This way your body will not get accustomed to a particular caloric intake which will result in continuous weight loss.
  • Change Meal Frequency as well- If you are eating 3 meals a day, try eating 5 small meals a day or vice versa. Though eating 5-6 small meals is highly effective for weight loss, you can make it even more effective by changing your eating pattern every 10-15 days.

Changing your exercise and meal plans works wonders for your metabolism. In order to avoid hitting weight loss plateau, you must demand more from your body by changing the intensity, duration and frequency of your exercises.
